Eoghan Clifford’s main areas of research are:
1. Development of new sustainable technologies in environmental engineering, water and wastewater treatment and transport infrastructure (such as cycling lanes).
2. Policy development to enable best practice and energy efficiency in operating water, wastewater, sludge and waste treatment facilities.
3. Sustainable practices, that reduce carbon emissions during infrastructure development
4. Modelling of environmental systems – particularly water and wastewater and solid waste management facilities.

Mark’s research interests include: sustainable environmental engineering solutions to wastewater treatment systems; surface and subsurface processes with a particular interest in erosion and surface runoff of nutrients, solids and metals, and leaching of nutrients through soil; greenhouse gas emissions; soil fertility and sustainability; constructed wetlands; sand filtration; sequencing batch reactors; biosolids; composting; and the effects of forestry activities, such as clearfelling, on the environment (nutrient loss, use of buffer zones, greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere).

Xinmin have been actively involved in research in environmental and energy engineering in the key research areas including: (1) development of sustainable technologies for nutrient removal from domestic and industrial wastewaters; (2) biofuel production from biomass and solid waste; (3) mitigation of nitrous oxide gas emissions from the water industry; and (4) synthesis of novel adsorbent materials for water and wastewater treatment. Xinmin has been awarded over € 2.0 m research funding between 2005 and 2011 (€ 1.4 m as PI and € 0.6 m as Co-PI). A substantial part of this funding is secured from the EU FP6 and FP7 programme (€ 1.12 m). National funding agents include EPA, Department of Agriculture, Food and Fishery, and Enterprise Ireland. Recently, he has also secured funding from the State Key Laboratory on Aquatic Environment, China to carry out collaborative research work with key research institutions in China. Xinmin has a number of international appointments: (1) Adjunct Professor, School of Civil Engineering, Hefei University of Technology, China (April 2010 – ); (2) Adjunct Professor, School of Environmental and Civil Engineering (Dec 2011- ); (3) Associate Editor, Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering in China (Springer and Higher Education Press of China); and (4) Editorial Board member, the Open Systems Biology Journal (Bentham Science Publishers).
