Research interests in materials and manufacturing for the sustainable environment:

  • Multi-scale thermo-mechanical characterisation of advanced, high temperature materials for power generation
  • Failure modelling of fibre-reinforced composite materials for renewable (wind and tidal) energy applications
  • Sustainability-driven, multi-scale structural integrity of advanced power generation technology (e.g. gas turbine technology, steam turbine technology) – energy considerations
  • Sustainable advanced manufacturing technology – UFG (ultra-fine grain) superplastic forming of lightweight alloys (titanium, aluminium alloys) for increased efficiency and reduced emissions in transportation (aerospace)

Bryan’s primary research interests lie in the area of geotechnical engineering and in particular piling, ground improvement and tunnelling. Within the area of Sustainability and the Built Environment, Bryan has been involved in a laboratory study looking at the use of recycled materials for the construction of stone columns, a form of ground improvement used to support foundations and slabs carrying low to moderate loads. He is currently supervising a research student who is appraising the embodied energies associated with various geotechnical options that might be considered for the construction of motorways over peat. Relevant to this appraisal is the emission of gases that may arise from the excavate-and-replace option preferred to date in Ireland for such projects.
